General Information About Data Science and Analytics

What is Data Science?

Data science combines computer science and statistics. By integrating programming skills, machine learning, mathematics, and statistics, professionals are able to extract meaningful insights out of large data sets that are too complex for traditional methodologies. This vast amount of information is also known as “big data,” a term that’s popularly used in the industry to describe collections of data that are too massive to be analyzed on one computer.

Every day, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created. With the rise of rapidly advancing technology, businesses need to collect, analyze, and derive meaning from raw data now more than ever before.

Today, there are many in-demand job roles in the field, including data analyst, data scientist, business analyst, and data engineer.

Data Science vs. Data Analytics

There are many overlapping disciplines within the field of data, so much so that it can be hard to distinguish between specific topics. When it comes down to data science and data analytics: what’s the difference between the two?

Data science is a broad term, often overarching multiple fields related to mining big data. There are many skills required for data science including math, statistics, and the tools necessary to sort and manipulate data including R and Python programming. The objective is to find the right questions to ask, in order to discover new patterns or perspectives that can help organizations make valuable connections.

While data analytics is related to data science, it is more focused, relying on automation, such as data cleaning, data visualization, and data modeling, to sort through information and use it to answer tangible questions with actionable insights. By combing through data using popular tools like SQL and Excel, its focal point is business intelligence and strategy.

Georgia Tech Data Science and Analytics Boot Camp covers the foundational skills needed to analyze and solve complex data problems by diving into fundamental statistics, Python and R programming, machine learning, Tableau, front end web visualization, and more.

Data Science Graduate Degrees vs. Boot Camps

So you’re thinking of becoming a data scientist and have decided to invest in your education. You’ve narrowed down your options to obtaining a data science graduate degree or attending a bootcamp.

Like with many careers in today’s ever-evolving job market, there is no one tried and true way to enter the field, and securing a role as a data scientist requires extensive training and experience. How do you decide which path is the better fit for you to take the first step? Let’s break down your options for gaining the foundational skills to enter the data field:

  • Boot camps are fast-paced, short-term programs that can take anywhere from a few hours to several months to complete. The curriculum primarily consists of project-based coursework with an emphasis on real-world problems led by instructors with industry experience. Due to the rigorous and accelerated nature of these courses, classes are usually limited to mastering high-level key skills and building the tools to continue expanding on your knowledge after the course ends.
  • A data science master’s degree takes one and a half to two years to complete. Assignments incorporate team-based learning and individual research centered around theory and applied skills. With the volume of students enrolled in such programs, job placement following graduation is competitive and acquiring practical experience is highly recommended.
  • A PhD in data science ranges from four to seven years. Students are designated thesis supervisors that delve into complex problems, and coursework is tailored to theory and personal research. Choosing and preparing for a thesis requires serious thought and the ability to demonstrate your academic strengths, so incorporating data analysis, programming, and practical experience is necessary.
